What is a Gingivectomy?
by: Dental Assistant Team
Gingivectomy is a dental procedure often done for both cosmetic and health-related reasons. It involves the removal of some of the tissue of the gingiva, or gums, to achieve a more pleasing appearance, or to make the teeth and gum line easier to clean.
Gingivectomy was developed to treat periodontal disease. While it is still used to treat this condition, gingivectomy is now more commonly used as a cosmetic surgery procedure.
Gingivectomy is often used to treat gum disease when other methods have failed, and before the progression of the disease threatens the bone and ligaments that support the teeth. It can reshape or remove gum tissue that is loose or diseased, as well as closing gaps that form between the teeth and gums.
This procedure used to be performed by an oral surgeon or periodontist, but with today's technology, we are able to perform this procedure in a cosmetic dental office with a laser.
At Drs Rohrer's we have acquired this great new technology a little over a year ago and we love to explain to our patients how easy, painless, and much less expensive a gingivectomy has become.
This new technology for gingivectomy saves the patient from an uncomfortable recovery, as the laser cauterizes the tissues and shortens your healing time and discomfort (if any at all).
You might feel a mild dull ache when the anesthetic wears out, on a scale from 1 to 10, it might be a 3 if the procedure was more complex than average.
Another great aspect to this new technology is that it saves you a trip to the specialist, an injection or two, and a whole lot of money. No more scalpel, stitches, follow up visit and most importantly, no recovery time!
At Drs Rohrer Cosmetic Dentistry we are always educating ourselves on the latest technologies available to bring you better oral care at the most affordable price.
