Bleaching your teeth
by: Dental Assistant Team
In today's world, many of products are available to us to achieve that bright white smile.
There are so many options nowadays when it comes to achieving that bright white smile that the options can become overwhelming. From the dental office bleaching, custom trays, over-the-counter strips kit, or even pencils it can be very difficult to identify the better option. Have you found yourself in that state of indecisiveness? Fear not, you are not alone!
So let's look at how you can decide which approach will work for you.
The first question I ask a patient looking for the best teeth whitening method is if they have sensitive teeth, and if are they are looking for a quick fix or don't mind dedicating some time at home to go through a longer teeth whitening process.
The method which will give you the fastest results is to have a professional, in-office, bleaching. The procedure will take a few hours and when you leave a few shades lighter, we send you home with custom trays to wear after a treatment with desensitizer. The trays are great for future touch ups or if you decide you want even brighter teeth. This is be the fastest way to jump start the teeth whitening process. In most cases the desired shade of white is achieved in just one day. This teeth whitening method is usually recommended for patients that do not have issues with teeth sensitivity.
If you are worried spending time in dental chair for a couple of hours, or you are worried your teeth might be too sensitive for an in-office bleaching, then you will want to consider custom bleaching trays. Custom bleaching trays are more convenient in some aspect as teeth sensitivity isn't a problem and it is an at-home treatment, however, to achieve the desired result you will need to dedicate 2 hours a day for at least two weeks to your bleaching. Most people do not experience sensitivity while using a tray, however, if you do we recommend to wear the trays with desensitizer in between applications or sometimes skip a day. You will get the same results as long as you keep doing it daily as recommended.
It is important to note that whichever method you decide on to reach your teeth bleaching goals, in or to maintain the whiteness, you have to stay on a "color-less diet". This means that you will have to try to avoid: tomato sauce, red wine, coffee, tea, blueberries, and other similar foods for about two week. The reason we recommend you stay on a color-less diet for 2 weeks is because the bleaching material opens up pores in your teeth making it possible to penetrate the enamel and whiten your teeth. These pores being open during the bleaching process, they could also absorb food color.
What about the over the counter products?
A lot of over-the-counter do work. With dedication and patience one can reach the desired whiteness, but since over-the-counter teeth bleaching products do not contain the same percentage of bleaching material than what dentists use, the process will require a lot more time and a lot more disciple when it comes to the types of food you can eat during your whitening regimen.
I have personally used all 3 approaches on myself and found that they all work in their own way, so the choice is yours!
