If you have ever had canker sores you know what an inconvenience they can be.
Canker sores are small ulcers usually found inside our mouths, cheeks, under the tongue, or even on the palate. They are considered an auto immune disease but unlike cold sore, canker sores are not contagious.
Canker sores can be so painful that when you have an outbreak, you can hardly swallow, you can't eat, and even talking can become painful experience. A canker sore outbreak can last up to 10 days and can come back at a later point in time.
I personally have experienced them several times in my life highly stressful times, or when I was sleep deprived as a new mom. I dread them.
It seems that in when we are very stressed, not eating properly, sleep deprived, or lacking a certain type of vitamin such as B12 for example, we are more prone to be the victims of canker sores. Even chocolate can be a cause for canker sores according to research from the Mayo Clinic, for those who are sensitive or allergic to chocolate.
My outbreaks started when my daughter was an infant and I attribute my unpleasant experience with them to sleep depravation and interruption in my sleep. I found myself in the office of an ear nose throat (ENT) specialist that found these nasty little ulcers down my throat, ear canals, and asked me if I was sleep deprived. He had no idea I had a three month old baby and I said "YES". I was indeed sleep deprived!!!
Having suffered from canker sores for many years I have come to the following rule for myself:
I avoid consuming too much: caffeine, sugar, citrus, dark chocolate, alcohol and nuts during an outbreak. I build my immune system back up with anti oxidants (my favorite is Lysine, I take as much as 1000 mg at the time of an outbreak). I also take acidophilus caps. I break the cap and sprinkle the powder right on the canker sores (at least the ones that are accessible) and eat plain unsweetened yogurt (organic is better). Wait to drink for 30 min after eating the yogurt.
I avoid vinegar or anything spicy or too salty.
Probiotics are also a good way to boost your immune system. I also gargle with a salt water rinse, and suck on ice to relieve me at times as it helps numb the areas affected but the canker sores. Honey works for me as well.
