What is bruxism?
by: Dental Assistant Team
Bruxism is another way to call teeth grinding or excessive clenching. Bruxism often occurs during times of high stress. It usually happens at night leaving the patient with a tender jaw, a sore neck and usually associated with morning headaches and very sensitive teeth. While the short term effects of bruxism are mostly moderate pain and discomfort, the long term effects of bruxism are much more concerning for your teeth.
The repeated movement and pressure on both upper and lower teeth grinds the enamel over time eventually leaving you with very little tooth. This phenomenon can also lead to broken teeth which will require restoration.
Aside from stress, bruxism can also be caused by interference in the bite. In this case, a full bite assessment can be done by your dentist. Your dentist will perform a treatment called Bite Equilibration consisting of a few visits. Bite equilibration is not an invasive treatment. No numbing is required. Your dentist will use a high tech scan to check where the interferences are and will adjust the bite according to what the scan reveals. This makes it easy for you to see and understand as your dentist adjusts the interferences.
If interference in your bite and stress are not the cause of your bruxism, then your persistent night grinding/clenching can be due to a neurological issue which may not be controllable. In this case, a well-constructed bite guard will be a great help in sparing your teeth from damage.
In this instance, the bite guard will relieve you from the morning tightness in the jaw, neck pain and headaches and the other related symptoms.
When left untreated, bruxism can lead to loss of tooth enamel, loss of tooth; as well as heightened tooth sensitivity to certain foods, toothpaste, whitening products, and more. The tooth damage from bruxism can also prevent your teeth from functioning properly, ultimately affecting the esthetic of your mouth.
