Diagnostic Tools - The Intra-Oral Camera
by: Dental Assistant Team
There are really a lot of records needed for the Doctors to properly diagnose you during an exam. Depending what you are in our office for, we will make use of a variety of diagnostic tools. In addition to a visual exam, x-rays and study models (for more complex cases) are commonly used. But there is a relatively new tool that has taken on a huge role in almost every exam: THE INTRA-ORAL CAMERA.
The Intra-Oral Camera helps us see what an x-ray can can’t, like micro-cracks that even a magnifying glass could miss. The images that the camera takes are displayed in real time onto the big-screen monitors in each of our operatories. Our patients are always appreciative when they can see what the doctor is seeing (although it can sometimes be a bit disconcerting to see tooth decay and plaque magnified 50x!!!)
Our doctors use the Intra-Oral Camera as they remove decay, and these pre- and post-procedure photos are filed in your chart enabling us to give you a step-by-step explanation of what took place.
I am so grateful that Dr. Tom and Dr. Joy believe in investing in cutting edge technology and insist on exposing us to it as soon as possible. It took me a bit of practice to get the hang of using it properly, and I am now using it as part of our initial assessment when we have an emergency, in order to show the patient what is going on in their mouth and to give a heads up to the Doctors prior to them seeing a patient.
This new technology is so flexible and invaluable that Caterine, our incredible hygienist, uses it as part of her hygiene protocol as well.
Remember… a picture is worth a thousand words. We feel like the pictures taken with our Intra-Oral Cameras are worth A MILLION!
