Stained Teeth and Teeth Whitening
by: Dental Assistant Team
Although you may think otherwise, teeth come in a wide range of color.
As a dental hygienist, the shade guide I use as a reference is based on four different hues (A B C D), and five levels of brightness (1,2,3,3.5,4).
As we age, teeth tend to darken from the food we eat. Some beverages - such as tea, coffee and red wine - will also stain teeth over time and contribute to the existing stains and discoloration you might have.
When my patients mention to me they are not satisfied with the color of their teeth, or are shocked to see evidence of staining during their check-up, we talk about few options that are quiet simple. Most are surprised to learn they can achieve a brighter smile with just a little dedication and a few habits to maintain that bright smile they desire.
The fastest fix is an in-office bleaching. After spending just a few hours in our office, they leave with teeth that are few shades lighter. They are also sent home with custom-fitted bleaching trays in order to maintain that bright smile in between checkups.
If a lengthy in-office process is out of the question, during a shorter visit we can make the bleaching trays and, after a few weeks of consistent bleaching at home, similar results can be achieved.
lf bleaching trays are not a good solution for a patient, we have another method for whitening teeth, strips that we also offer as an alternative to custom trays. We provide the patient with a 10-day supply, and the strips are worn once a day for 15 min. The strips we provide in these cases are much stronger than the popular over-the-counter products, and work very well.
Of course, if you are consuming coffee, tea, or red wine regularly you can use a whitening toothpaste, and there are a number of rinses we can recommend that work very well to help maintain a brighter, whiter smile. It’s also a good idea to rinse your mouth out with water after consuming anything that may stain the teeth to help minimize the potential staining.
